The Corporate Membership of the Institution is open to any person with an accredited engineering degree with prescribed professional experience. With accumulation of continued professional experience and level of responsibilities the membership of a Graduate can be upgraded to Associate Member, Member and Fellow grades, subject to strict scrutiny by a nominated high level Committee at IEI, HQ, Kolkata.

Abridged Eligibility Guidelines for the Corporate Membership of the Institution :

Qualifications:

Qualifications accredited by the Institution and included in the rules and syllabi shall be accepted for various classes of Membership. Other qualifications may be accepted in consultation with the Equivalence Committee. In case of persons having passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations, period of experience shall be reckoned from the date of passing Section A Examination subject to a maximum one year prior to the passing of Section B Examination.

Employment :

‘Position of responsibility’ in the profession of engineering may, in general, be taken to start from the post of Assistant Engineer (Junior Engineer for States where it is the initial appointment in some parts of the country) in Government Departments; Second Lieutenant in the Army, or equivalent position in the Navy and the Air Force; Assistant Lecturer in Engineering Colleges; Lecturer in Polytechnics; and equivalent posts in other organizations. Post-qualification experience of 10 years in such post shall be considered for Membership (MIE) and 5 years for Associate Membership (AMIE).

In case of engineers holding relatively lower position of responsibility like Sub-Engineer, Supervisor, Overseer, etc, experience of 12 years in such post shall be considered for Membership (MIE).
‘Position of High Responsibility’ (Bye-law 46 (ii)) may, in general, be taken to start from the post of Superintending Engineer in Government Departments; Lieutenant Colonel in the Army or equivalent position in the Navy and the Air Force; Professor in Engineering Colleges; Associate Professor in the Universities / IITs; Principal in Polytechnics, and equivalent posts in other organizations. Post-qualification experience of 15 years in such post shall be considered for Fellowship (FIE).

In case the applicant holds the post of Executive Engineer / Reader / Assistant Professor or equivalent without a postgraduate qualification in engineering for a minimum period of 8 years with total experience of 20 years, he/she shall be considered for Fellowship (FIE).

In case the applicant holds the post of Executive Engineer / Reader / Assistant Professor or equivalent with postgraduate qualification in engineering for a minimum period of 6 years with total experience of 18 years, he/she shall be considered for Fellowship (FIE).

In case the applicant holds the post of Executive Engineer / Reader / Assistant Professor or equivalent with PhD qualification in engineering for a minimum period of 4 years with total experience of 16 years, he/she shall be considered for Fellowship (FIE).

In case of self-employed persons / Consultants where the designation does not convey the status of responsibility, the period of experience for consideration of their applications for various classes of Corporate Membership shall be 5 years for Associate Membership; 12 years for Membership and 20 years for Fellowship. However, each and individual case shall be considered on merit by the Membership Committee.

In case of private industries / organizations, the level of designation shall be ascertained with respect to the hierarchy in their respective industry / organization.

A Corporate Member of IEI enjoys privileges such as :

Chartered Engineer :

Any Life Corporate Member of the Institution of Engineers (India) can designate himself as a Chartered Engineer (C Eng).

A special certificate specifying as Chartered Engineer ( C Eng ) can be obtained on payment of Rs. 5000/- only (for India/Nepal) and US$ 500 only (for other countries).

This is applicable only to the Members who have paid Composite Subscriptions / Life Compounding fees in full. Applications on a plain paper, specifying professional attainments along with a demand draft of Rs. 5000/- only or US$ 500 only, as the case may be, drawn in favour of ‘The Institution of Engineers (India)’ and payable at Kolkata, mentioning the membership number on the reverse of the draft, can directly be sent to

Professional Engineer :

A Member of a Fellow with an accredited engineering degree, not less than 15 years experience in the profession of engineering in a position of responsibility can apply to be enrolled as Professional Engineer. The selection is subject to peer assessment by a nominated Professionals’ Committee

The Application forms for enrolment as Senior Technician (ST) / Technician (T) members of the Institution are received throughout the year. Sections ‘A’ and ‘B’ Examinations of the Institution are held twice a year, generally in June and in December and are termed as SUMMER and WINTER Examinations, respectively.

UPGRADATION OF MEMBERSHIP :

Members of the Institution are requested to apply for upgradation of their membership

Graduate to Associate Member Minimum 5 (five) years post-qualification professional experience
Associate Member to Member Minimum 10 (ten) years post-qualification experience in a responsible position

PHOTO IDENTITY CARD :

The Life Corporate Members (FIE/MIE/AMIE) desiring to obtain the photo identity card may apply on a plain paper indicating their name, membership grade and number enclosing two copies of colour photographs measuring 3 x 3 cms and remitting Rs. 150/- only for India / Nepal and US$ 15 only for other countries (Rs. 200/- only and US$ 20 only, respectively, with effect from July 01, 2009) in the form of a demand draft drawn in favour of ‘The Institution of Engineers (India)’ and payable at Kolkata.
